No disciplinary action for Greenburgh teacher, principal in test flap

July

State education officials will not take any disciplinary action against Merica Neufville, a Woodlands Middle School teacher who was found to have provided improper assistance to students during a state test. A state Education Dept. investigation found that she suggested to some students that they double-check their answers to a particularly difficult question and told others “don’t get slapped,” taken as an indication that they might have chosen an incorrect answer.

Woodlands Middle Principal Michael Chambless also won’t be punished. The state report found that he did not properly prepare or supervise test proctors and that he failed to secure test booklets.

Earlier this week, we reported that because of Neufville’s actions, the state will not count the scores of 17 students in the affected class in the school’s annual progress reports. The sanction is administrative and won’t affect students academically, officials said.

Past posts on this topic are here and here and the state’s final determination on the incident is here. Read more about this story in tomorrow’s The Journal News.
