With the goal of bringing the pleasures of summer reading to Mount Vernon children JCY-Westchester Community Partners and the Mount Vernon Public Library have teamed up to provide Summer Reading Buddies, a free summer reading program.
Summer Reading Buddies pairs up volunteers with students in grades K-6 to help them complete their summer reading assignments.
“Summer Reading Buddies has been a great success in Yonkers, with over 250 students participating last year. We’re thrilled to bring this program into Mount Vernon and hope to see many children and adult “buddies” working together to improve literacy” said Janice Kohn, Director of Programs for JCY-Westchester Community Partners.
The JCY has been in operation since 1919 and is currently Westchester’s leader in intergenerational literacy programming.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to receive additional reading resources throughout the summer,” said Dr. Tony Sawyer, Superintendent of the Mount Vernon School District.
The program is held every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through August 13 at the Mount Vernon Public Library, 28 South First Avenue.
Parents may register their child by calling the library at 914-668-1840 ext 211.
Summer Reading Buddies is funded by the Friends of the Mount Vernon Public Library.
