The Greenburgh school district announced the appointments of two principals today.

Ronald Ross, a former superintendent in the Mount Vernon school district, will take the top job at Woodlands High School, replacing Robert Chakar. Chakar’s departure sparked some protests from students earlier this year. Read about that here and here.

Patricia Simone, who was let go as assistant principal of Woodlands Middle School to cut costs, will serve as principal of Lee F. Jackson Elementary School. Read the district’s press release after the jump. Check back later for updates and read the full story in tomorrow’s The Journal News.

UPDATE (7/16): A district spokesman corrected some details about Patricia Simone. The change has been made and some material has been removed pending confirmation.

Mr. Ronald Ross and Ms.Patricia Simone, two professionals with years of experience and achievement in education, have been appointed as principals of Woodlands High School and Lee F. Jackson Elementary School respectively, it was announced today.

“We are delighted to have these two professionals on the Greenburgh 7 team,” said Schools Superintendent Ronald Smalls.  “We are confident that they will help us in our efforts to attain excellence in education in our schools.”

Ross has more than 30 years in education serving in a variety of key administrative positions throughout the metropolitan area, including Superintendent of the Mount Vernon City school district (1998-2002), during which the district was the most improved school district in the state.

Ross also served as principal of the Hempstead High School (1996-98), during which time it was removed from the state list of underperforming schools, after more than seven years on the list.  In addition, Ross was responsible for creating Unity High School in Manhattan, a new alternative high school, which became a leading model for working with underachieving students.

Ms. Simone joined the Greenburgh 7 School District in 1999 as a fourth grade teacher in the Richard J. Bailey School Elementary School. She has been Assistant Principal of the Woodlands Middle School since 2005.  Simone revitalized the International Baccalaureate Program leading it to receive IB authorization, the only middle school in the region to be recognized with this honor. Simone was an English Language Arts Lead Teacher at the Richard J. Bailey School and also served as the District Literacy Instructional Specialist.
