Learn NY history with summer reading

Public libraries every year encourage students to read during the summer to keep their minds sharp. And in some districts, summer reading is required.
This year, the state has compiled a reading list that teaches the history, culture, and diversity of New York. “Be Creative: Explore New York” is the slogan of the 2009 Collaborative Summer Reading Program and was developed to recognize the 400th anniversary of the voyages of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s invention of the steam ship.
By participating at their local libraries, students can read state-selected biographical and fiction titles including Sultans of Swat: The Four Sluggers of the New York Yankees, The Great New York City Trivia and Fact Book, and dozens of other books. Selections include everything from picture books to novels.
