Furnace Woods educator retires after 43 years

June
30

Furnace Woods Library Media Specialist Elaine Desimone will retire at the end of June after 43 years of service to several generations of students.

Desimone arrived in 1966, just prior to Furnace Woods opening its doors. “I was just going to try it for a little while,” she said. “One year led to another and another, and yes, I have the one and only Library Media Specialist at Furnace Woods for the past forty-three years.”

When she started, her title was “Librarian” and her library housed books and magazines.  Today, she is a Library Media Specialist and her area includes a computer lab, an electronic card catalogue, and of course, books and magazines.

In honor of her hard work and loyalty, in May the Furnace Woods Library was officially renamed the Elaine Desimone Library.

“Retirement is a new chapter of my life,” she said. “I am looking forward to lots of traveling and scheduling time to read, cook, and entertain among other things. I will, of course, miss Furnace Woods.”
