Students suffering from the flu or who are experiencing flu symptoms are advised to stay home from school for up to a week. But at the end of the school year, that could mean that they will miss Regents and final exams.
The state Dept. of Health has issued recommendations to school districts on how to handle these situations. Dobbs Ferry and other districts are putting the recommendations in place, and arranging for students to make-up final exams as soon as possible and to take Regents exams when they are offered again in August.
From a letter sent to parents from Dobbs Ferry superintendent Debra Kaplan:
Students who have experienced flu-like symptoms within the last seven days and are scheduled to take the state-mandated Regents’ exams:
- Should be symptom free for 24 hours (except for residual cough)
- Will be placed in a separate room from other students to accommodate year-end testing requirements
- Should be on-site at the school only for the period of the exam
- Should not participate in any other school activities
No children currently with a fever greater than 100 degrees should come to school. They will need to complete their Regents exam when it is offered again in August. Those students that are ill and are scheduled to take final exams should not come to school, but should contact their guidance counselor to work out an alternative time to make-up the exam(s).
