Newsweek’s 2009 list of top public high schools

June
9

Three local high schools cracked the top 100 in America’s Top Public High Schools published in Newsweek.

Rye High School ranked 63rd in the nation on the list, followed by Bronxville at 64 and Harrison at 73. The widely-watched index looks at the number of students in all grades who take advanced-placement, international-baccalaureate or Cambridge exams and divides the total by the number of graduating seniors. Schools with larger ratios rank higher, but only a fraction of all schools make the list.

Other local schools on the list and their ranks:

Dobbs Ferry, 128

Yonkers, 136

Edgemont, 160

Blind Brook, 199

Briarcliff, 218

The list caused some local controversy last year after Dobbs Ferry and several other districts nationwide, questioning the validity of the index, asked to be removed from the rankings.
