Tomorrow, IBM will be offering one of its innovative Women in Technology workshops to middle school aged girls at the YWCA in White Plains – an organization strongly aligned with female empowerment projects and committed to helping young women discover their potential and achieve success.
For ten years, IBM has been offering Women in Technology workshops to girls in Westchester and Putnam County in an effort to expose girls at a young age to the exciting fields of science, math and technology. The workshop program builds awareness of career opportunities for women in these fields, provides girls with access to female role models in the Information Technology industry, and places strong emphasis on the importance of staying in school and getting a good education.
A team of IBM women facilitators will be working on-site at the YWCA Activity Center on North Street with middle school girls in the YWCA GEMS (Girls Empowered Through Meaningful Support) and Kids Connection Programs for an interactive 3-hour afternoon event. Young women who are home-schooled will also be joining the activity.
After an initial group discussion and some science games to break the ice, participants will be separated into teams and participate in a hands-on learning experience that teaches them how the fields of science, math and technology can lead to rewarding (and fun!) careers.
Each team will design a company and be assigned a “product” for which they will build their very own marketing plan and deliver presentations via PowerPoint to the entire group. The workshop is designed to be fun, creative and empowering for participants, with an ultimate goal of sparking an interest in these fields and increasing awareness of the importance of education.
The IBM Women In Technology Workshop will be held in the YWCA Play Room from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
