Yonkers police reports, school violence stats don’t match

March

Every public school in New York state is required to file a report listing all of the “violent and disruptive incidents” that occur. However, an investigation by The Journal News found that in Yonkers, police calls from the city’s middle and high schools depict criminal activity that differs from the district’s reports to the state.

An article, published Sunday in The Journal News, revealed that Yonkers police logged 1,255 calls from the city’s nine middle and high school buildings from July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007. The calls resulted in 102 arrests, and included reports of 65 assaults and 57 larcenies.

In the 2006-07 state Violent and Disruptive Incidents Report, or VADIR, the Yonkers public schools reported 30 assaults and eight larcenies in those schools. Arrests are not reportable in the state report.

School districts provide their own reports to the state, and over the years, some critics have charged that there is an incentive to under-report because too many incidents could put a school on the state’s list of persistently dangerous schools. No Yonkers public school is currently on that list.

You can find the complete story here: Yonkers police, state reports differ on crime. The Journal News has created an interactive database that provides details on all of the police calls to the district’s secondary schools. The database is here: Police calls to Yonkers secondary schools.

The Journal News also provided map showing the totals for each school, for example, the total number of arrests, larcenies, etc. You can find that map here: Yonkers police responses to secondary schools.
