Kids are being challenged to put their green ideas to work by building small wind turbines to transform the energy of the wind into electricity.
The task is part of the KidWind Challenge, and the Somers school district is one of the participants. The winning designs will be determined during regional events to be held in Buffalo, the Albany area, and the Lower Hudson Valley region during the month of May.
“If we are to fundamentally change the way we produce and consume energy in this country, we need to start challenging the next generation of innovators,” said Michael Arquin, director of the KidWind Project.
All students and schools in New York are eligible to enter. The top three teams in each region will recieve monetary and other prizes. Once the teams are registered for the competition, KidWind will provide them with a basic generator, measurement equipment and competition guidlines. The rest of the design work is up to the students.
The project is funded through a $25,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
