Nanuet concert includes newly commissioned work

January

The Nanuet High School band is adding something new to its spring concert: a work that will receive its official premiere in early March at the New York State Band Director Association’s symposium.

The Director’s Association commissioned a work by composer Timothy Broege for the symposium, and the state honors band will premiere it at for the state’s band directors.

That same piece will be part of the upcoming spring band concert in Nanuet, where it is giving the students a change from Sousa, Vaughn Williams and Holst. In essence, the Nanuet band is premiering the piece for the state’s Region 7.

“It’s really a beautiful piece,” said Walter Miller, who has been rehearsing the high school band on “Dreams of the Blue River” for the past week or two. “It’s a great experience for the kids to play something where the ink isn’t even dry yet, something people haven’t heard. It’s a cool experience for them.”
