Representatives from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have sent a letter and what they described as a “kindness kit” to Haverstraw Middle School’s principal Avis Shelby, and a request that she use the kit to help teachers and students be more considerate and caring of each other.
The kit, titled “Just Choices,” and the letter were sparked by the recent incident at the school where a seventh-grade teacher taped the hands and ankles of two students as part of a social studies lesson on slavery.
According to PETA’s executive vice president Tracy Reiman, “Just Choices encourages kids to reevaluate old ideas and explore new ways of relating to each other without discrimination in regard to race, religion, nationality, gender or species. It translates into respect for everyone.”
School officials at the time the incident was reported in the Journal news said they have spoken with the teacher and the parents of the two children involved in the incident and have taken appropriate action. They did not specify the action since it’s considered a personnel matter and not public information.
Just Choices is available through PETA for anyone interested in the literature.
