Clarkstown school officials eye $187M facilities project

December
3

A slew of facility improvements could be coming in the Clarkstown school district. Here’s the details, from the administration…

Last evening at a special Board of Education (BOE) meeting at South High School, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Meg Keller-Cogan presented her recommendation to the Board of Education regarding facilities improvements for the 16 buildings owned by the Clarkstown Central School District. Her recommendation was the culmination of a two year and two month study of the district’s facilities and infrastructure needs.

Dr. Keller-Cogan provided a history of the work done to date to assess the facilities, the meetings held with various public groups, the numerous presentations and reports presented to the Board of Education, and the financial implications of the capital work.

She has recommended that the BOE work to repair the schools’ infrastructure needs, focusing mainly on roof, window and door replacements, American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and safety compliance issues and the refurbishing of North High School’s campus.

Approximately $29 million dollars of work has been eliminated from the original cost estimates presented by the architects and construction management firm hired by the district, leaving only repairs that are considered integral to the maintenance and structural integrity of the buildings.

She has requested that the BOE establish a capital vote date on March 10, 2009 asking the voters to support a capital project not to exceed $187,000,000. The district’s current aid for capital work is 55.1%, thus reducing the homeowners’ financial responsibility to 45% of the project’s cost.

Last evening the BOE unanimously approved the SEQRA resolution initiating the legally required environmental impact study that will occur over the next 30 days allowing the BOE to hold a formal vote on the capital project at the January 8, 2009 BOE meeting at Chestnut Grove.

Well, what’s another hundred and eighty seven million between friends? Drinks all around. Oh, and throw in another five hundred for books.
