A brief reprieve

It looks like school districts won’t face mid-year cuts in state aid — at least not until January. Gov. David Paterson met with more than 200 legislators today in an emergency session to tackle the state’s deepening financial crisis.
However, The Associated Press is reporting, that the 90-minute meeting did not result in an agreement on Paterson’s proposed package of $5 billion in budget cuts. If the cuts were approved they would have cost schools in the Lower Hudson Valley $49 million in state aid.
The AP report said legislators got Paterson to suspend any cuts in the current budget, aimed at closing a projected $1.5 billion to $2 billion deficit, until January. Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos said the midyear cuts shouldn’t be made until the governor presents his full proposal for the 2009-2010 fiscal year next month, the report said.
