The state Comptroller’s Office released information last week relating to 19 school districts it spot-audited to see if they were correctly using a reserve fund set up to pay employees for accrued leave time when they left the district.
Where most of the districts were found at fault for making millions of dollars unaccessible that could be used to pay down the local tax rate, South Orangetown got mentioned for a different reason.
It was one of two districts audited that did it right. It not only calculated its reserve properly, it was specifically praised in the state report for its diligence in working with taxpayer funds.
“The state confirmed during the exit conference with district officials that they believed South Orangetown’s … interpretation of governmental accounting standards … is conservative and appropriate,” said schools Superintendent Ken Mitchell in an e-mail sent out to district residents. “The state commended us for being a good example of how this reserve should be used in accordance with the law.”
The district’s spokespeople said the accolades for good work belong to deputy superintendent Ann Vaccaro-Teich and her staff, who oversee the district’s finances.
