The Mount Vernon school district could save $12,313 per year if it shut down its computers when they aren’t needed. Mount Vernon was one of seven school districts that the Office of the State Comptroller studied to see how much could be saved by powering down.
In its audit, the Comptroller recommended that school districts and municipalities shut down computers weeknights, weekends and over holiday periods.
It looks like wasteful computer use isn’t a huge problem in Mount Vernon, though, according to the audit. Overall, only 13 percent of computers were left on during periods of inactivity during the normal workday, which was far less than the average of 43 percent.
In a response to the audit, officials said the Mount Vernon school district would do what it can to reduce energy use on computer systems.
