CANDLE Conference, the beginning

October

I’ll be blogging out of the 16th annual CANDLE Conference for Professionals who Work with Youth. CANDLE (Community Awareness Network for a Drug-free Life and Environment (that’s a mouthful)), a nonprofit that works on youth drug prevention and violence, will focus this conference on bullying—a theme of its past two conferences—as well as gender identity and youth and technology.

Joanne Goodman, executive director of CANDLE,  tells me there are a little more than 105 participants—teachers, school administrators, social workers, psychologists and mental health workers—from all around the New York Metro area.

The keynote speaker, psychologist and St. Thomas Aquinas College administrator Walter Schneider, was unfortunately stuck in traffic. But, for now, I just sat down at a workshop on biphobia—discussing misunderstandings of bisexuality and sexuality in general—so here goes…
