CANDLE Conference, keynote

The conference ended up getting flipped and keynote speaker, Walter Schneider, spoke at the end of the day.
Schneider is a psychologist, psychology professor, and VP and dean of student affairs at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
He talked about underage drinking and the Amethyst Initiative, a public statement signed by chancellors and presidents of universities and colleges across the U.S., asking for the drinking age to be lowered from 21 to 18.
“If the drinking age were 18, it would be open, we would be able to supervise it better,” Schneider said.
Because the minimum drinking age is 21, he said, underage drinking on college campuses has been driven underground, with many youths abusing alcohol. He said the Amethyst Initiative is a way to draw attention to the seemingly inexorable problem of underage drinking on American college campuses to find better ways to address the issue.
Conclusively, even though he didn’t disagree with the basic premise of lowering the drinking age, he said the initiative was more or less a way to spark a dialogue, and it’s certainly done that.
