Gordie Foundation tackles binge drinking on college campuses

September
23

In light of the story I recently wrote about binge drinking on college campuses, I received an e-mail from a representative of the Gordie Foundation.

The Gordie Foundation, a Dallas based non profit, was started in 2004 by a family who lost its son, Gordie Bailey, to alcohol poisoning at the University of Colorado during Chi Psi fraternity’s secret initiation ritual involving hazing using alcohol.

Today the foundation has more than 100 chapters of its “Circle of Trust” on college campuses across the country.

The Circle of Trust is a peer education program that educates college students about the dangers of peer pressure, hazing and binge drinking.  Through these groups, The Gordie Foundation passes out free educational materials to students by students.

“We are not here to tell students not to drink, simply to educate them on the dangers they face if they choose to drink,” Michelle LeGrande, communications coordinator, said in the e-mail. “All too often, college students overlook the dangers of binge drinking and the importance of taking care of those around you that have been drinking.”

Check out the Gordie Foundation Web site for more information.
