Today, Dominican College kicked of its annual Founders’ Week, an event honoring the Dominican Order’s founding members and Dominican members who’ve made a significant change in the world. This year, Founders’ Week will highlight the life of Dominique Pire, an international relief worker and 1958 Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
On Monday and Tuesday, as part of a visiting scholars series, the college will host a debate on the presidential election process and the merits of the Electoral College. The debate will be moderated by college students and will include Robert Bennett, a Northwestern University law professor, and John Samples, director of the Cato Institute’s Center for Representative Government.
On Wednesday, Sister Arlene Flaherty, a college alum, will speak on the Iraqi refugee crisis. Flaherty, who works for Catholic Relief Service, helped arrange a delegation to visit Syria and Lebanon to find out firsthand about the plight of Iraqi refugees.
On Thursday, the college will present its Spirit of the Founders’ Awards for the tenth year running and hold an annual barbecue.
Last, Friday will be “Preaching in Action” day. The college will offer child-rearing workshops specifically for relatives as parents. Dominican students will provide childcare services for those attending the workshops. The day will also include activities for preschool kid, with lunch included, and after-school activities for kids and teens.
