From Yorktown…

Kavya Devarakonda has been named as a semi-finalist in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Kavya represents one of the less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the entire country. More than 1.5 million juniors in over 21,000 high schools entered the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Kavya and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

About 90 percent of the 16,000 semifinalists will advance to the finalist level, from which about half will be chosen as National Merit Scholarship winners.
