Throughout the day yesterday, students at Albertus Magnus High School gathered around a special memorial garden to remember the school’s five alumni who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The graduates were Michael McHugh, class of 1984; Sean Fegan, class of 1985; Brian Novotny, class of 1986; Michael Roberts, class of 1989; and Kevin Reilly, class of 1991. Reilly 28, and Roberts, 30, were firefighters. McHugh, 35, was a securities trader and Tuckahoe village trustee. Novotny, 33, was a bond trader. Fegan, 34, was a portfolio manager and financial analyst.
The heart of the memorial is a rusted steel beam in the shape of a cross from the south tower and includes a circular stone base around the beam with a retaining wall and planters, a stone path, flowers and a plaque etched with the five men’s names and the image of the Twin Towers. The five benches were purchased individually by the families.
The memorial was made possible by Mary Novotny, an Albertus school nurse from New City who lost her son, Brian, on Sept. 11, 2001.
The school provided The Journal News with photos of the commemorations conducted yesterday.
