Testing kindergartners?

Just saw this on the Associated Press wires and I’m sorry, but does anyone else think this is going just a bit too far?

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Education Department has unveiled a plan to give standardized English and math tests to students as young as kindergartners.
It’s the latest move to expand standardized testing in the nation’s biggest public school system.
Education Department official James Liebman encouraged principals in an e-mail Monday to sign up for the initiative. He said it would help them evaluate how their schools were doing before third grade, when testing required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act begins.

As the mother of a four-year-old who’s starting pre-K next week (eek!), I’m astounded at this. We’re having a hard enough time accepting that pre-K is a full-day, five-day-a-week program.

Testing kindergartners?

Really?
