Got an e-mail from a rep from Franklin Electronics plugging three things your student must have to begin school this year.
He’s not plugging fancy backpacks or droopy drawers. All three products are electronic verbal word machines.
First is the Speaking Children’s Dictionary with spell correction, which allows a child to speak a word into the unit and get a definition in both print and cursive. It also comes with several word-building games. The information doesn’t specify how cognates and homonyms are handled.
Second is the Speaking Spelling Bee, a hand-held virtual spelling bee for grade school students. The unit can be linked to a television screen for contests with up to 10 spellers. It comes with three play modes and multi-level difficulty choices.
Third is the Speaking Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition. The unit is lighter than the printed version, according to the information and is designed for high school students. It comes with a phonetic spell correction function, a grammar guide with quizzes, a five-language translator and word games.
We don’t recommend or guarantee any of these, but it’s interesting to see what’s available for kids.
