Keeping an eye on education

Not your typical summer camp

July
23

I love how many opportunities kids have to keep busy during the summers these days.

This month, the Putnam/Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services has been hosting a series of hands-on camps ranging from TV Production camp to Fashion Design camp to Carpentry camp. Nearly 150 middle school students participated in at least one of the four sessions, which took place July 7 through August 1.

One of the nine camps was the Culinary Arts Camp, which is among the most popular.

“I like making food, and I like eating it,” explained Mahopac Middle School student Jack DeMinno about why he decided to attend the Culinary Arts Camp.

Students learned to cook Italian, Caribbean, Irish, Latin American, and American regional dishes. They rolled dough for apple pies, sliced and diced vegetables for Polynesian stir-fried veggies, and learned about the spices that go into Caribbean jerk chicken.

The Culinary Arts camps are taught by Chef Christina Holic, Hospitality teacher Janet Stewart, Chef Jen Guiffre, and Chef Stanley Rupinski.

“It’s so fun,” said Cortlandt Manor’s Colleen Nestler. “It’s something I’ve never done before.”

And for that bored teenager who’s been lazying around the house too much and too long, this summer—or for the ambitious teen who wants to beef up his or her college application resume—check out the Monroe Summer Law Institute (MSLI). Monroe College (www.monroecollege.edu) is offering this week-long residential program at its New Rochelle campus, August 17-22. This is the third year for this highly successful, intellectually stimulating and also, fun program for high school students. Guest lectures are given by accomplished working professionals in all fields of criminal justice and law. The program includes field trips to destinations as diverse as forensics labs and a “CSI” walking tour in New York City. Plus, the price is very affordable: $499 for tuition, room and board. It’s also a great introduction to college life and living in a dormitory with roommates! For more information call 914-740-MSLI (6754).
