Sokol refuses South Orangetown board seat

Howard Sokol, who galvanized members of his South Orangetown school district by insisting he would take his school board seat despite a DWI arrest
the day after his election, has bowed to pressure and stepped down.
He was supposed to be sworn in last night during the district’s reorganization meeting. Instead, he made a short statement to the effect that media coverage of his arrest and the subsquent fallout from the community has gone past his own issues and touched on his family. Therefore, he would resign the seat before being sworn in. Then he left.
The board will meet next week to determine what to do about the seat. The board can hold another election or appoint someone to fill his term.
