ENTERGY CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE COURSE WITH $35,000.00 AWARD.
Peekskill, NY (June 30, 2008) Thanks to Energy Nuclear Northeast, Peekskill students from the Middle and High schools will continue a three-year course in scientific research designed to give them near-professional skills and experience in competing in scientific competitions.
This years award of $35, 000.00 will help to fund supplies and equipment.
In September students will begin work on independent science projects, in preparation of eventually participating in competitions such as INTEL and WESEF.
They will learn research skills and interact with scientists and other experts in the field.
This is a phenomenal program for us, said Gordon Hubbard, who is the science department chairman for Peekskill High School and Peekskill Middle School. Andrea Blizzard and Joe Pollack of Entergy were on hand at a recent Board of Education meeting to present the district with the check. Mr. Pollack said Entergy, which operates the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, was excited about readying students for the challenges of the 21st century.
Entergy recognizes that in today’s competitive environment, about the only competitive edge is the talent of our young people, McMullen said. This is a program about releasing the creativity of young people in our schools.
