Dear Ms. Costello,
My name is Amanda Marello and I am a 2004 alum of Holy Rosary School in Hawthorne. I would like to thank you for spending the time to write about the emotional response to the closure of Catholic schools throughout the area. It is truly a shame to think that hallways once filled with vibrance and love will be devoid of this come September. Holy Rosary School’s last day was on June 20th and although I was not able to be there, I can only imagine what a difficult day it was. Luckily enough, my brother was a member of the last graduating class. I cannot put into words the emotions that overcame everyone seated in Holy Rosary Church during the graduation ceremony. I don’t believe there was one dry eye in the parish.
The faculty and staff at Catholic grammar schools are unlike any other. Each and every day they create a family environment for their students and their dedication and smiles create an invaluable learning environment. I know that even though I graduated four years ago, I have kept in close contact with my teachers and visited my grammar school often. It saddens me to think that I will no longer be able to do so; that I might lose some of this contact. My elementary school teachers have always been a source of guidance, but more importantly, an inspiration. I can only hope that I will bring half of the dedication and passion to my job as they bring to theirs.
Thank you again for bringing attention to the closure of Catholic schools. Because of my wonderful experience with Catholic education, I know that when I have children I would want for them to attend Catholic grammar schools. I am hopeful for the future of Catholic elementary schools; a future that can only begin when a new, and more compassionate Cardinal becomes leader of the Archdiocese of New York.Sincerely,
Amanda Marello
