Tim Russert is missed by more than just those who watched him on TV or knew of him through his comedy stylings.
He delivered commencement addresses more than once at colleges in the Lower Hudson Valley, and Dominican College in Orangeburg, for one, mourns his death.
He was the college’s commencement speaker in 2001 and received an honorary doctor of laws degree. They even provided a quote from his commencement address
No exercise is better for the human heart than reaching down to lift up another person.
After discovering his Dominican College connection, I dug a little deeper into our archives, and it turns out he also was at Purchase College’s graduation in 2003 (check out the comment that posted at 10:12 a.m. June 14 on this article, though it says the graduation in 2004 and I only found reference in our archives to 2003). Here’s a photo, shot by The Journal News staff photographer Frank Becerra Jr., of Russert talking to Purchase College president Tom Schwarz:
Then I found that he was the commencement speaker in 1994 up at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.
He had a message to share with those graduates as well:
You have been given extraordinary opportunities. But to whom much is given, much is expected.

wow, thank you for posting those quotes, amy. he definitely was a role-model for many.
