Keeping an eye on education

High school journalists honored

OK, we’re posting this one a bit late because we didn’t want these kids taking our jobs. But a week is enough time to keep this under wraps, so now The Hall Monitor can congratulate the winners of the 18th annual Journal News High School Journalism Awards.

Eighteen area high schools received awards in the competition, which recognized the best work from among 433 entries in 12 categories. They were presented at the newspaper’s main office in Harrison last week.

The students submitted some impressive work, including top award winner, Hackley Schools’ The Dial. From our story here: “The top award, for overall excellence, went to Hackley School’s The Dial. The paper’s staff offered reports that were a superb balance of news. Everyday topics – new class schedules, speeding on campus and a tournament win for the varsity girls’ basketball team – were well blended with stories of wider relevance, including coverage of the presidential primaries and an analysis of how the nation’s economy could affect the school. Mahopac High School’s Chieftain took second place in overall excellence. Third place went to John Jay High School’s Focus.”

Read the complete list of winners after the jump and congratulations to all the students. Keep up the good work.
