Students help one of their own

Each year, the fifth-graders at Purchase Elementary School raise money to give back to the community before moving on to the middle school. This year, the students have chosen to give back to one of their own, a fifth-grader named Deanna Penna.
Deanna was born with Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair. The money her classmates raise will be used to buy equipment that will give her additional mobility and enable her to become more independent, especially in her own home.
I have the privilege of knowing Deanna, and let me tell you this kid’s got spirit! Most recently, she and I were at a friend’s college graduation party and you should have seen her right there on the dance floor with all the other kids doing the electric slide! She doesn’t let anything get in the way of a good time, and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do once it’s even easier for her to get around!
Come support the “Deanna’s Dream” fundraising car wash from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 7 at Purchase Elementary School, 2995 Purchase Street.
If you are not going to be in the area but would like to help, please e-mail LISALAMANNA16@hotmail.com or send donations to Deanna’s Dream at 2995 Purchase Street, Purchase, N.Y., 10528.

Hats off to the 5th Grade Class of Purchase Elementary School. What a great idea to give back to one of their own. It’s a breath of fresh air to see children doing a kind deed for another child.
Amen!
