Jacqueline Powers of Larchmont has been selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to receive a Fulbright award to Morocco. Powers, who graduated from Georgetown with a bachelor of arts in French in 2006, “will research the degree to which the 2004 Moudawana reforms have contributed to women’s socio-economic empowerment,” according to an announcement from Georgetown.
“Through independent research and volunteer work at the Democratic Association of Moroccan Women in Rabat and the El Amane Association for the Development of Women in Marakech, she hopes to gain an understanding of the effects of these new laws on the lives of both rural and urban women. Powers will use library archives, local print, online and television media as well as personal interviews with Moroccan women to gain a greater understanding of how written law has had a tangible impact.
“At Georgetown, Powers placed specific emphasis on the Maghreb region in her coursework, reading of literature, and independent research. She spent a year studying at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and completed an honors thesis in French with distinction on “The Conflict of Generations and the Future of Muslim Youth in France.””
