Fresh off the e-mail from the Columbus Elementary School Chess Club, I find out that several of the team’s players were in Pittsburgh Mother’s Day weekend for the Elementary Chess Nationals Tournament.
Above are the students who went to the Bert Lerner Elementary Chess Nationals at the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburg. Front Row – Left to Right: Tania Abate, Leanna DiSapia, Dahlia Perez, Brittany Echeverria; Middle Row – Left to Right: Evan McCullough, Adrian McCullough, Chris Galvez, Vicente Molina, Christopher Hurst; Back Row – Left to Right: Arturo Flores, David Lopez, Grant Taylor, Kevin Garcia and Coach Polly Wright. Not pictured: Zaleik Walsh (he was playing in another building)
The players were invited to play “based on their year-long participation and achievement
playing lunch time and after-school chess from grades 1-5.” The primary coach is Mark Hegenauer, but couldn’t accompany the team to Pittsburgh.
For full individual and team results, go here. There were 10
sections and 2,186 registered players. The Columbus team ranked at 25th place out of 63 teams in the “K5 Under 900 category (4th and 5th graders).” The top 30 teams in that category won trophies.
Congrats!
