Catholic school teachers picketing in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Lay teachers set up picket lines outside the New York Archdiocese headquarters and a Roman Catholic school Friday, hoping to call attention to their contract dispute during Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the city.

“The pope’s theme is hope and we want hope that we can get a contract,” said Charles Chesnavage, one of about 50 teachers outside Cathedral High School and the nearby Terence Cardinal Cooke building, where the archdiocese has its headquarters.

The pope started his three-day New York visit Friday morning at the U.N., about 10 blocks from the picket lines set up by the Lay Faculty Association. The pope wasn’t likely to see the striking teachers, however, because the picketing was set to end at 1 p.m., while Benedict was still at the U.N.

The teachers walked out Tuesday in a dispute over wages, health premiums and pensions, forcing some schools to close early. The union, which represents 450 teachers at 10 schools, went on strike for 17 days in 2001.
