Catholic schools teach thousands of Lower Hudson Valley students

April
17

Catholic schools in the Lower Hudson Valley are educating more than 18,000 students this year. In Westchester, 59 schools are teaching more than 15,000 students while an estimated 2,530 students are attending 10 schools in Rockland. Putnam’s three Catholic schools are educating an estimated 590 students.

To commemorate Pope Benedict’s visit to the Lower Hudson Valley, we have created an interactive map showing Catholic schools in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. The map includes contact information, school web sites (where available), e-mail, phone numbers, principals’ names and school enrollment (for schools reporting those figures). Note: Five schools in Westchester did not provide enrollment figures.

In all, the Lower Hudson Valley has 72 Catholic schools, although that number will drop to 67 when more are slated to close. In June, these four schools will close: Holy Rosary Elementary in Hawthorne and Immaculate Conception in Irvington (both in Westchester) and Immaculate Conception Elementary in Stony Point and St. Catharine Elementary in Blauvelt (both in Rockland).

St. Lawrence O’Toole Elementary in Putnam County is scheduled to close as well, although school and parish officials have embarked on a campaign to save the 82-year-old school. So far, the school has raised $100,000 in pledges spread out over the next three years. To learn more about the school’s efforts, visit its Web site:
