A report released today by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that New York once again led the nation in per-pupil spending in fiscal year 2006, by doling out $14,884 per student. New Jersey came in a close second with $14,630 per student.

How much is that compared to the rest of the nation? On average school districts nationwide spent $9,138 per student. Utah spent the least ($5,437).

New York, along with West Virginia, also led the nation in transportation spending, doling out 21 percent of its total support services spending on transportation alone.
