Fear Factor hits Rye Neck cafeteria

Do you dare?

That’s what the cafeteria staff at the Rye Neck Middle School will be asking students as they stage a “Fear Factor Tasting” tomorrow in the dining hall.

Organized by the PTSA MS Health and Wellness Committee in collaboration with the management and staff of the Rye Neck dinning hall, the event will give students the chance to eat exotic foods such as mangoes, artichokes, coconut milk and much more.

Mmmm. Sounds good to me!!

Here’s some of the foods on the menu…

What Fruits and Vegetables Have I Tasted?

The Artichoke originated in southern Europe. Artichokes are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Folic Acid, and are low in Saturated Fat, Sodium, and Sugar.

The Blood Orange is a mix between a grapefruit and a Tangerine. It is said to have probably originated in Sicily. Blood Oranges are a good source of Dietary Fiber and Vitamin C.  It is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.

Edamame is a green vegetable more commonly known as a soybean. Edamame is a good source of Dietary Fiber, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Phosphorus.  It is is very low in Sodium.

Fennel is an herb that grows wild in most warm parts of Europe. Fennel is a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Folate, and Potassium and very low in Cholesterol and Saturated Fat.

Heart of Palm: Costa Rica is the primary source of heart of palm in the US. It is low in Calories and a good source of Dietary Fiber. Additionally, it is loaded with Potassium.
The Mango originated in Southeast Asia where it has been grown for over 4,000 years. Mangoes are a good source of Dietary Fiber and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Potassium. It is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.
The Papaya is native to the tropics of the Americas, and was cultivated in Mexico several centuries ago. Papaya is a good source of dietary Fiber, Potassium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Folic Acid.  It is low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.

Plantains are grown in Florida, the Caribbean and Central America, the Canary Islands, Madeira, Egypt, Southern Japan and Southern Brazil. Plantains (not fried) are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. They are also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Potassium, and a very good source of Vitamin C.

A Prune is a dried fruit from the plum. California is one of the largest prune producers is world. Prunes are a good source of Dietary Fiber, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin K, and Potassium.  It is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.
Spaghetti Squash is an American native vegetable. Spaghetti squash contains many nutrients including Folic Acid, Potassium, and Vitamin A. It is also low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol.
An Ugli fruit is a citrus fruit created by mixing a grapefruit with a tangerine. The Ugli fruit is rich in Vitamin C and is A good source of Dietary Fiber. It is also very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium.
