Students from throughout Westchester are joining forces in the name of jazz.
On Saturday, musicians from high schools in Peekskill, Somers, Ossining and Croton Harmon will participate in “The Many Faces of Jazz.” The concert will be held at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill on Sunday.
Ray Blue, a nationally known saxophonist and former Peekskill High student, and Vince Corozine, a former Peekskill music teacher, worked with bands from all four high schools over a three-week period along with the schools’ band directors, Ivelaw Carrington (Croton), John
Hahn (Peekskill), Gordon Russell (Somers) and Rodrigo Vargas (Ossining).
The result will be a mix of jazz and blues, with each band presenting a blues piece. They will all perform Corozine’s original piece, “Down Home Blues” and an arrangement of “Troy.” Blue, Corozine and the band directors will perform with the bands.
“This is the third concert in an exciting three-year collaboration by these diverse school districts,â€? said Judith Johnson, superintendent in Peekskill. “The music they produce lasts longer than one evening — it celebrates the notion of embracing differences and distinctiveness, which young people must learn and value in their role as citizens.â€?
The show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. They may be purchased at the Paramount box office, or at www.paramountcenter.org.
