College scholarship deadline quickly approaching!

March
1

Time is running out for graduating high school seniors from low-income families hoping for $10,000 college scholarships from the Jandon Scholarship program.

Nominations must be received by Friday, March 7.

Jandon Scholarships are designed to help academic achievers whose families are on public assistance or living at or below the poverty level. Last year, 15 scholarships were awarded over four years of college.

To encourage students to complete their education, the program offers an increase in the amount of the scholarships for each year they remain in school. First year students receive $1,000; sophomores $2,000; juniors $3,000; and seniors $4,000.

To be eligible, a student must attend a public high school in Westchester County and be a member of a family with an income below the poverty level.

A selection committee, consisting of two foundation members, four well-known educators and a county representative, awards the scholarships based on junior and senior-year grades, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores and good character.

Jandon is a private foundation created by Jane and Donald Cecil of Harrison, New York who funded the Mount Vernon “I Have a Dream program and the Neuberger Museum of Arts “Writing Through the Arts program.  The collaboration between the Jandon Foundation and Westchester County combines the Cecil family’s philanthropy with County Executive Andy Spano’s administration’s philosophy of breaking the welfare cycle through education.

For more information, contact Janis Viola at (914) 995-2905 or visit www.westchestergov.com/jandon. Completed applications can be mailed to The Jandon Scholar Foundation, c/o Westchester County, 148 Martine Avenue, Room 906, White Plains, New York 10601.
