Keeping an eye on education

Then there were three…

February
21

Acute observers may have already noticed that The Hall Monitor staff is down to three, after losing editor Lanning Taliaferro and writer Alice Gomstyn.

Sorry for leaving everyone hanging as to their whereabouts…

Alice jumped ship and is now writing for ABC.com, which is great for her. She was a tireless education reporter covering Rockland County and her amazing sense of humor is especially missed here on the blog. Obviously I wish her the best. darth.jpg

And Lanning, as some of you out there already know, has given into the dark side (Yep, I said it!) and is now doing public relations for the Harrison school district.

Lanning’s departure was a big loss not only to the newsroom, but also to me personally. She was my first editor here when I was just an intern, and she had been my boss for the past 3+ years on the education beat. Let me tell you, any organization would be hard-pressed to find an editor with as much knowledge and experience in the field as Lanning brought to the job. She is passionate about education and is passionate about journalism. Harrison’s lucky to have her on board — and she wasted little time pitching stories! Within a week of her start, she had already gotten me out to cover an event. Now if I can only get her to start commenting on the blog….

    Wait a minute there.
I’ll have you know that according to my new colleagues in Harrison, I have finally come to the light.
Also, I have to say that the region’s school PR community (just like Harrison, filled with dedicated professionals doing an incredibly tough job very well) has been welcoming and helpful, and I’m grateful.
And to you folks in the newsroom who gave me a rolodex as a farewell present because I was too old to handle an electronic address book, let me just say I plan to lurk on this blog a lot.

    Sincerely,

    Darth Lanning

I’m just busting on ya! I’ve always had a great relationship with everyone on the PR end of things (except when they call at 5:45 on Friday to pitch a story…sheesh!).

Glad to get you posting. Don’t be one of those people who just lurks. Become a character!

It’s a sad state of affairs when:
    A) journalists view public schools as the “dark side”.
    B) public schools have to spend tax dollars to combat journalists who view public schools as the dark side.

    theshepard—You obviously missed the joke!!!!

I wasn’t calling the schools the dark side. I was joking that public relations is the dark side. You see, lots of journalists end up going into public relations and it’s a common joke that they’re selling out to the dark side. But really, it’s just a joke. Like I said above, I’ve had great relationships with PR people, and I’ve even thought about doing public relations myself. So your comments are a little off…
