OSSINING â€â€A graduate from Ossining High School’s class of 1998 was nominated for a 2008 Academy Award. Francisco Bello shot and produced Salim Baba, a 14-minute documentary, which was nominated in the Best Documentary/Short Subject category of the Oscars.
Bello, who graduated from Cooper Union School of Art, has worked in post-production of feature films for the likes of Kevin Smith and Michael Moore among others. His recent credits as an editor include the 2006 feature documentary In the Footsteps of Orpheus, HBO’s Betty la Flaca, and Showtime’s Julieta y Ramon. Bello launched Ropa Vieja Films, which produced Salim Baba, in 2007.
Salim Baba is a film about 55-year-old Salim Muhammad, who lives in Calcutta with his wife and five children. Muhammad has made his living for 45 years as a movie projectionist, who shows bits of discarded film to neighborhood children on a hand-cranked projector. A smart businessman and film lover, Muhammad runs his projector with his sons in the hope that they will carry on his legacy. The film was directed by Tim Sternberg, who is nominated along with Bello.
