Recycling education, Yonkers and my funnybone

November
7

I just received a press release from the Yonkers school district about the visit of “the Chomper” to School 5.

“The Chomper” is a special recycling garbage truck, and the visit from the DPW is part of the students’ environmental studies.

Now sure, I am committed to reducing, reusing and recycling. But what a great name! Conjures up some great mental pictures, doesn’t it?

For one thing, it’s ready-made for excuses. “But teacher, the Chomper ate my homework.”

It’s also the stuff of ghost stories told by fourth graders to first graders in whispers. “You know, when the Chomper visited Museum School 25 last year a kindergartener disappeared and was NEVER SEEN AGAIN.”

My apologies to the good, hardworking people of the Yonkers city schools and public works departments. I hope we can get a photo of “The Chomper” visiting the school, if so, I’ll post it here.
