Field trip: Souvenirs for the time-strapped board member

There’s a neat perk for school officials registered for today’s conference: NYSSBA is giving all of them a chance to get their photos taken in front of New York City landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Times Square…without leaving the hotel.
Conference participants stand in front of a green screen—the same type of screen often used to insert out-of-this-world backgrounds in sci-fi movies and the like—to get their photo taken and then wait for NYSSBA photo pros to superimpose a city image over the green space.
Ifay Chang (pictured below), a school board member with the Somers school district, chose the Statue of Liberty background.
“It’s patriotic,” said Chang, who was born in China and educated in Taiwan. “Freedom is the most important thing…sometimes people take our freedom for granted.”
Chang used his freedom this morning to attend seminars on educating disabled students and increasing high school graduation rates. This afternoon, he plans to attend a session on cutting costs.
“It’s definitely on everybody’s mind,” he said. “The cost of education and the cost of healthcare are two items that blow everybody’s mind. They never stop increasing.”

I did not know Journal News would cover conferences with personal story like this. It is very refreshing to see articles like this. Well done.
