A group of students from Isaac E. Young Middle School recently visited the Applied Physics Dept. at Columbia University, where scientists research nanotubes and nanotechnology, among other areas. Their science teacher, Scott Misner, hopes the trip sparks an interest in science as a possible career. The students visit an observatory, a “clean room” and watch a demonstration of a scanning electron microscope. They were also kind enough to send The Hall Monitor some pictures from their trip.
Students and parents prepare for a demonstration of a scanning electron microscope. From left to right: Dana Heyward, Calvin Heyward, Claudine Burrell, Courtenay Spalding, Yahaira Barbosa, Austin Akey (Columbia Grad Student), Akshay Koottala, and Dr. Sarbajit Banerjee, a post doctoral student at Columbia who is operating the microscope.

Finally, the scanning electron microscope is put to use, photographing a student’s eyelash. Very cool.
