New York school employee benefits among most costly

New York schools spent more money on fringe benefits in 2005 than any other state except Indiana, according to statistics gathered by the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
At $12,756 per employee, the state’s school districts spent 70 percent more than the national average of $7,502.
And the New York State School Boards Association reports this month that the state’s leading teachers union is planning to put pressure on lawmakers for even juicier benefits.
“While we certainly value the workforce and want to reward them accordingly, something is out of whack,” said NYSSBA President Carl Onken. “New York cannot be competitive as a state when pension and other employee benefits costs are so high compared to other states.”
