Newspapers are a great teaching tool, specially for teachers looking for creative ways to vary all that writing and math instruction they have to do under NCLB these days.

Yesterday Diana and I were the kick-off speakers as sixth-graders at Dobbs Ferry Middle School embarked on a special cross-curricular project about newspapers.

We talked about all the different kinds of jobs involved in creating a daily newspaper, website and TV news show. We discussed reporting and writing, fact and opinion.

And as you can see we brought in a stack of yesterday’s papers and we showed them how they’re put together. (I chose to ignore the call for staples.)

They are a great bunch of sharp kids.
