Westchester’s own quiz show: Round 3

March
7

We cover high school sports, so why not keep tabs on the local academic competitions? White Plains math teacher Les Roby just sent us the latest results from the Westchester Academic Challenge of Knowledge Organization tournament, known by the acronym WACKO. He reported to us on the last tournament and now he’s back with another exclusive. Take it away Mr. Roby:

“The WACKO season comes to a close for 2006-2007. WACKO #3 was held on Saturday, March 3, 2007 with New Rochelle, Horace Greeley, Hastings, and White Plains making it into the semifinals. #1 Seed New Rochelle fell to #4 White Plains 310-275 in a very close contest, while Hastings converted a close match in the early stages into a 380-240 win over Horace Greeley. In the finals White Plains took control early, led 180-80 at half-time enroute to a 405-310 final score. White Plains ended the campaign at 14-1 and two tournament victories, New Rochelle was second at 11-2 ( with the third victory), while Hastings and Rye Country Day were tied at 10-3. Congratulations are also due to Fox Lane A the winner of the Consolation Division and Vahalla A the runner-up; Fox Lane winning a tight 270-250 contest.

“Richard Sassoon (Hastings A) was the top individual with 600 points, followed by Jacob Paul (White Plains A) 525, Sam Jacobson (Edgemont A) 440, and Jo Slempa (Peekskill A) with 360 points. On the season the top-dog was Victor Brady (White Plains A), followed by Paul (WPA) and Sassoon (HAA).

“At this point the qualifiers for Nationals are: Ardsley, Byram Hills A & B, Edgemont, Fox Lane A, Hastings A & B, Horace Greeley, Irvington, New Rochelle, Rye Country Day, and White Plains A & B. The Westchester Tournament of Champions for these teams only will be Tuesday, May 22 from 3:30 to 6 PM.”

He adds:

“NEXT TOURNAMENT:

SEE YOU AT 8:00!!”
