These unpaid volunteers spent time attending workshops that covered a wide range of topics useful to board members. They learned about long range planning, high school and middle school programs for the 21st century, student achievement, good practices in school board governance, fiscal accountability, leadership during school emergencies, effective management of construction projects and many other useful topics. Often the best part of the experience was networking with colleagues from across the state. This professional development opportunity is critical for enhancing the skills of board members. Attending the convention and sharing the information learned with the community, models a standard of life long learning for the entire school community. My hat is off to all school board members and the work they do on behalf of the public school children in Westchester and Putnam.
