Keeping an eye on education

Slipping through the cracks

An interesting tidbit contained within this latest release of school test score data, was the percentage of students in the Lower Hudson Valley whom are significantly below state standards in math. The percentage of students scoring at Level 1, the lowest score on state tests, rises dramatically with each grade level.

The percentage at Level 1 by grade: Third: 3.6, Fourth: 4.6, Fifth: 6.9, Sixth: 10.2, Seventh: 9.8, Eighth: 10.5.

There were 565 students at Level 1 in the third grade last year and 1,636 eighth graders. So while it’s well-known that the percentage of students who meet state standards between the third and eighth grades declines dramatically overall, the number who struggle at the bottom is also growing rapidly.
