Some funding left behind?

Schools in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam are being short-changed by a total of about $30.5 million in federal Title I funds (funds geared toward helping low-income students) proposed for 2008 fiscal year, according to analysis released today New York Sen. Charles Schumer.
Schumer said in a teleconference today that the funding promised to schools when the No Child Left Behind Law was initially signed into law (back in 2002) isn’t reflected in the Bush administration’s proposed budget.
But, Schumer said, he’s using some of his “new clout in the Senate” to channel part of the overall spending increase proposed for the Department of Education—about $6.1 billion — into Title I and special education programs. In “the new Senate”, Schumer added, a number of senators ran on the platform of fully-funding No Child Left Behind.
How does the Bush administration feel about Schumer’s analysis and not-so-subtle digs? Not sure yet, but I’ve put a call into the feds so hopefully we’ll find out soon.
For now, here are the numbers broken down by county, courtesy of Schumer:

Proposed 2008 funding: $35.2 million
